Kindergarten played with blocks in music! Well, rhythmic building blocks that is...we introduced two Orff Rhythmic Building Blocks today to use in our classroom music - the duple Eighth Note pair and the single Quarter note. We filled four blocks with four beats of sound to clap on hands and pat on knees while reciting names against these accompaniments. Future use of these building blocks will extend to other activities of reading, playing accompaniments, instrument playing, and Kindergarten level lyric writing.
Fifth grade extended their singing skills - my goal was to encourage the classes to maintain their strong sound over an extended period of time. We centered our activity around three different songs with activities of patting, clapping, round singing, and instrument playing unique to each - all while rehearsing our singing voices to support each other and aim to near performance level of enjoyment. Solo leaders led the class in improvisations during our weekly Musicians Pledge - and later each student vocalized a solo over four beats of time telling us all of a favorite lunchtime food. This leads us to next week where we will "open a restaurant" with solo vocal improvisation activity centering on a favorite subject - Food we like to eat! Groups will form menus to recite in rhythm as we learn of their restaurant - A yummy day today and next week for sure!!
