A year to solidify skills to be used in future years starting with Chorus.

Ode to joy

March 2014 4th Grade Chorus Concert Snippet

This year we pursue more challenging musical endeavors!  We assess our Recorder playing against District Determined Measures and gain a first experience in Concert Preparation for Performance in Chorus.

Examples from classwork meeting our learning goals might include:

SINGING - Welcome; SInging All Together 3 parts of the 5 part song in All School Meeting; Sing to Life 3 part round in class; Using both "chest" and "high" voice, Singing to express the Story or idea of the song; Hand signs DO, RE, MI, SO; Be the LEAD singer during the Musicians Pledge Improvisation each class; 

PLAYING - Steady Beat Patschen while singing; Rhythm pattern Patschen while singing; 2 part ensembles of Class Ostinato and Improvised Solo; Repeat rhythm patterns back to the leader; Recorder will continue to develop reading and playing skills using secondary high note fingerings.

MOVING - Learning and performing Sequential Pattern using upper body choreography with the CUPS song; 

MUSIC READING - 
RHYTHM PATTERNS in Quarter, Eighth Note Pairs, Sixteenth Pairs with Eighth Note, and Sixteenth Note Quads - SHORT, SHORTER, SHORT-SHORTER and SUPER-SHORTER;
PITCH PATTERNS - Treble Clef with Recorder; SOUND HOUND; Recorder will continue to develop Reading and Playing skills.

LISTENING - Play along with Professional Recordings Simplified Student Compositions; Identify and play rhythmic patterns in A and B sections or phrases

CREATING - Improvise lyrics to specific lengths of phrase in WELCOME Song; Accompany song with body sound patterns; IMPROVISING new melodies on C Pentatonic Octave scale to words of the Musicians Pledge.

SINGING –
Students will Sing:
     Sing rounds/2 part songs using expanded range, including partner songs
     Match pitch in appropriate range
     Sing in tune with themselves/class/and Chorus
     Use healthy singing voices with expression
     Sing independently
     Use hand signs/solfege

PLAYING -
Students will Play Pitched and Non-Pitched Instruments:
     Employ, use, and demonstrate steady beat
     Participate in 2 part ensembles
     Read or learn rhythms by rote
     Play rhythm patterns
     Play melodic patterns/intervals
     Play independently
     Continue Recorder with expanded range

MOVING -
Students will move with music:
     Continue Sequential movement patterns (Folk Dancing)
     Demonstrate expressiveness, form, meter and rhythm
     Respond to Musical Cues
     Use upper and lower body
     Dramatize songs and stories

MUSIC READING
Students will read music notation:
     Understand music symbols
     Use visual symbols and cues
     Perform notated musical patterns
     Treble Staff
     Introduce multiple staves
     Use pitch and rhythm syllables - Solfege

LISTENING
Students will engage in active listening:
     Exposure to a variety of styles and cultures
     Identify and describe Elements of sound (mood, tone color, tempo terminology)
     Identify and describe Elements of Form and Structure (Rhythmic and Melodic patterns, form, section)

CREATING
Students will improvise and compose with or without pitch and rhythm syllables
      melodies/lyrics
      simple accompaniments
      instrumental sounds
      body movements
